A Merganser in God’s Perfect Timing
This photograph is for you if you know what it feels like to try, to wait, and to nearly walk away. I had already moved twice along the shore of New Fork Lake, fingers cold, shoulders tight, convinced the morning had given me all it would. The water was quiet, glassy, carrying that clean lake smell that only exists before the wind wakes up. I was packing up—heart a little heavy—when the surface broke without a sound.
The common merganser appeared so close I could see every ripple roll toward the bank. He floated in without urgency, unaware of me, fully himself. The late light touched his feathers gently, revealing silvers, deep blacks, and soft warmth layered together in a way that felt intentional. Not flashy. Not loud. Just right. Standing there, I felt God’s timing settle in—how often beauty shows up the moment we stop forcing it.
