Before the Day Moves In
What I was never supposed to witness was a mother moose resting so close, holding her ground while the world quietly woke around her.
Most people search for wildlife in motion—this is what happens when stillness decides to look back at you.
There are mornings in Pinedale where nothing feels random. I had just stepped into one of my favorite areas when God gently shifted my path, like a quiet nudge you only understand in hindsight. I crossed paths with a young moose first—full of curiosity, startled for a breath before retreating to the safety of his mother. And there she was, a calm presence on the earth, the mother moose resting in the early blue light, her body low against the land, eyes meeting the camera without urgency or fear.
The sun was only beginning to rise, brushing the scene with soft, cold tones that made the world feel suspended between night and day. That kind of light doesn’t just illuminate—it reveals. It revealed patience, protection, and a quiet kind of strength that doesn’t need to move to be powerful.
Getting close enough for this moment wasn’t luck. It was hours of walking, waiting, and listening more than I moved. It was trusting that if I stayed present, something honest would unfold. That’s the part most people don’t see—the quiet discipline behind an image that feels effortless.
