I was hesitant to pull out my Sony 200-600 lens, as they were far away, and I knew they’d likely take flight if I got too close. But with my book forgotten, I couldn’t resist. Slowly, I began my approach, step by step, kneeling, capturing moments as I moved closer.

The male was visibly agitated, honking at his mate as she quietly followed behind. I could almost feel his frustration as they arrived to find the lake still frozen, instead of the familiar open water they’d expect in spring. I couldn’t help but smile at the sight of the female tripping on the ice—her struggles, just like mine, made me feel more connected to the land.

Their graceful struggle to find a nesting spot amidst the ice felt like a perfect metaphor for the balance of beauty and challenge found in Wyoming’s wilderness.
