That sense of patience and surprise is exactly what I experienced last weekend when I was invited to Brenda’s yard. I’m usually timid about asking for favors, but getting closer to birds often means stepping onto private property. This time, I had the chance to meet a blue heron that loves hanging out in her yard.

It was cold and windy, and I spotted the heron in the distance. I prayed it would land exactly where I was aiming—and just as I had hoped, it circled the pond. But before landing, it made sure to, well… lighten its load in the most dramatic way. Hahaha! 💩

Meanwhile, a Canada Goose was already in the yard, and we both acknowledged each other’s presence. I started photographing the goose, capturing its quiet confidence. But then—the Blue Heron arrived! I immediately turned my camera to focus on it, admiring its elegance and precision.

That’s when things took an unexpected turn. The Canada Goose, clearly unimpressed with losing the spotlight, gabbled its way right into my frame. It was as if it was saying, Hey! I was here first! 😂 The Blue Heron, offended by the goose’s dramatic intrusion, decided it had enough and took off. Just like that, the moment was over.

And that’s what I love about wildlife photography—you never know what’s going to happen. Much like completing a puzzle, every experience is filled with little surprises, challenges, and rewarding moments of clarity. 🖼️🧩
