I’m getting invited to more people’s yards these days, and I love it! As someone who's a bit shy about asking for favors, sometimes getting close to the wildlife I want to photograph means stepping onto private property. Last weekend, I visited Brenda’s yard and had an unexpected encounter with a Blue Heron, who likes to hang out there. It was cold and windy, but I spotted it in the distance and prayed that it would land exactly where I had my camera aimed. Miraculously, it circled the pond, pied massively, and finally landed right in front of me!

As I was shooting the heron, I noticed a Canada Goose hanging around, and we were both aware of each other’s presence. I was focused on the goose when the heron appeared, so I quickly turned my camera toward it. That’s when I swear the Canada Goose got jealous—it started honking and flapping its wings, trying to distract me. The heron, clearly offended by the goose’s antics, took flight and flew away, leaving me with a hilarious but beautiful memory of nature's playful rivalry.
