Some photographs are planned. Others are gifts.
Last year, God blessed me with countless encounters with sandhill cranes, but the day I captured this moment was unlike any other. The family came closer than ever before. The little colt looked so much bigger up close—a beautiful, silvery youngster still learning how to use its wings. For nearly an hour, I watched them feed, wander through the river, and simply be together.
Then, as quietly as they had arrived, they left.
I didn't know it then, but it would be the last time I would see them that year.
Just before they disappeared, the young crane stretched out its wings, offering one final, unforgettable moment. It felt like a farewell—a gift from God that I was privileged to witness and preserve.
That experience reminded me how quickly beautiful moments pass and why we should never take them for granted.
