God has been so good to me, blessing me with countless encounters with sandhill cranes. But this morning was different. It became a gift I didn't even know I was receiving.

For nearly an hour, I stood quietly along the river, listening to the water flow and the cranes calling to one another in the fresh morning air. They came so close that the little silvery chick filled my frame. It was still learning to fly, and then, as the golden light wrapped around its feathers, it stretched its wings as if it were celebrating the life God had given it.

Minutes later, the family flew away.

I didn't know it then, but it was the last time I would see them that year.

That moment changed me. It reminded me that the greatest gifts from God are often the ones we don't realize are our last. Every time I leave my wildlife subjects, I quietly wish them well and thank Jesus for letting me witness a small piece of His creation.
