When the Bighorn Came Down
This photograph is for you if you’ve ever felt on the edge of giving up, certain the moment had already passed. You can feel the long hours in it—the weight of standing still, the burn in your legs from hiking the cold slopes, the dry mountain air filling your lungs. The sun had been up for hours, harsh and unforgiving, flattening the landscape and my expectations. I was tired. Ready to pack up. But something told me to wait.
Then he appeared. A single bighorn sheep, high on the hill, steady and unbothered. His descent was slow and deliberate, each step measured, horns catching what little angle of light remained. The wind carried the scent of stone and pine, and the mountains fell quiet in that way that feels sacred. As I watched, more sheep emerged, one by one, as if the land itself was revealing a secret. What began in silence ended in movement, life unfolding right in front of me.
