The Stories Behind My Wyoming Wildlife Prints | Sandhill Cranes, Grand Tetons, Moose & Northern Lights

The Stories Behind My Wyoming Wildlife Prints | Sandhill Cranes, Grand Tetons, Moose & Northern Lights

September 1–8 I'll be opening one of my favorite print sales of the year.

Every photograph hanging on my wall has a story, but only a few have truly changed the way I see God's creation. I'll be sharing 4 of the 7 stories behind this year's print collection. I hope that as you read them, you'll not only see the photographs, but also experience the moments that made them possible.

These images are reminders that beauty often appears quietly, and that God's greatest gifts are sometimes found in the moments we least expect.

A quick note: You may notice that some of the images on my website look a little faded. Don't worry—it's a display issue that I'm currently working on with my team. The actual photographs are crisp, sharp, and rich in color. Thank you for your patience as we get everything looking the way it should.

The Goodbye I Never Saw Coming

Sandhill Crane Family | Wyoming Wildlife Photography

God has been so good to me, blessing me with countless encounters with sandhill cranes. But this morning was different. It became a gift I didn't even know I was receiving.

For nearly an hour, I stood quietly along the river, listening to the gentle current and the cranes calling to one another in the cool morning air. They wandered so close that the tiny silver-colored chick filled my frame. Still learning to fly, it stretched its little wings as the golden sunrise wrapped around its feathers, almost as if it were celebrating the life God had given it.

A few minutes later, the family lifted into the sky and disappeared.

I didn't know it then, but it would be the last time I saw them that year.

That realization stayed with me. It reminded me that many of God's greatest gifts are also His most fleeting. We rarely know when we're experiencing a "last time."

Now, every time I leave my wildlife subjects, I quietly wish them well and thank Jesus for allowing me to witness another small piece of His creation.

Sometimes gratitude begins after the moment has already passed.

Where Heaven Touched the Tetons

Grand Teton Landscape Photography

Last year, my older brother and his wife came to visit us, and we spent several days camping in Grand Teton National Park.

One afternoon, while exploring the far side of Shadow Mountain, I found a viewpoint that stopped me in my tracks. The light wasn't right yet, but I could already imagine what sunrise might do. I knew I had to come back.

The next morning we woke long before daylight and hiked through the cool mountain air. Aspen trees filled the forest with their fresh scent, and the world was almost completely silent. Every step carried the anticipation that something beautiful was waiting ahead.

Then it happened.

The first rays of sunlight touched the Tetons, painting the peaks with delicate shades of pink, as if Heaven itself had brushed color across the mountains.

I stood there speechless.

In that moment, all I could do was thank God for allowing us to witness such beauty.

The early alarm, the hike in the dark, and the waiting were worth every minute because they led to a moment that lasted only a few minutes—but one I'll carry with me for the rest of my life.

Some moments aren't just beautiful.

They become part of who you are.

The Moment I Stood Small

Bull Moose | Wyoming Wildlife Photography

The morning was cool and damp. The earthy smell of the willows filled the air, and the only sound was my own quiet breathing.

Truthfully, this photograph almost never happened.

I stumbled upon this bull moose twice before I was able to make the image. The first time, I spotted him unexpectedly, but before I could even set my backpack on the ground and get my camera ready, he slipped back into the willows and was gone.

The second encounter was just as brief.

Most people would have called it a day, but something in my heart kept telling me to keep looking.

Then, on my third encounter, everything came together.

As the sun began to rise, golden light filtered through the trees, catching the edges of his enormous antlers until they seemed to glow like fire.

He stood perfectly still.

Massive.

Powerful.

Yet completely calm.

For a few moments, I forgot there was even a camera in my hands.

I've photographed wildlife for years, but this bull made me feel wonderfully small. His size, his quiet confidence, and the way he eventually disappeared back into the misty willows reminded me how much greater God's creation is than anything we could ever build ourselves.

Getting this photograph required patience, perseverance, and trusting that quiet whisper telling me not to give up just yet.

Sometimes that's all faith looks like.

One more step.

One more hour.

One more try.

This photograph reminds me that some of God's greatest gifts are waiting just beyond the moment when we're tempted to quit.

Northern Lights: God’s Display in the Darkness

Northern Lights Over Fremont Lake

I pulled out my phone, found north, and started searching for anything I could use to frame the darkness.

The lake was perfectly still.

The mountain air was cold.

Every time I looked through my camera, the sky had changed again. No two photographs looked alike.

So I stayed.

I stayed until the battery in my headlamp finally died.

Long after I had taken enough photographs, I simply stood there watching God paint the night sky with ribbons of green and purple over Fremont Lake.

I remember feeling incredibly small.

Grateful.

Completely at peace.

That night changed the way I look at the sky.

Now, every time I see the stars, I'm reminded that creation is constantly declaring God's glory—even when most of us are asleep.

Some experiences don't just become photographs.

They become worship.
